In order to have believable hair extensions your pre-exisiting haircut needs to be supportive of your finished style. If you’re planning on adding length you’re going to need to have your hair be at least chin-length, with a two inch taper to the ends.
This haircut is about the right length, but it lacks the taper at the ends. If you were to install extensions without correcting this haircut first, you’d have quite a bit of a shelf to blend. It would look something like that. You need to have that taper so that the natural hair will seamlessly blend into your extensions. Let’s take a look at one that has a more defined taper.
The taper on this style is much more severe. When we lay the hair extensions underneath this hair the ends blend in and seamlessly taper in. There’s no blunt line and there’s no shelf to dissolve.
In addition to taper the other key factor is layering. You need to have hair that’s at least to chin length in order for those longer layers to be justified. Longer layers typically start at about chin length. If you have shorter hair, you’ll need to adjust your extension hair to be shorter in order to justify the layers in between your natural and the transition to your extension hair.
If you have an appropriate pre-cut, your extensions will always blend in and will always look believable.
